Three elements that assist in recovering from the effects of a loss can be experienced in our groups:
1) Gathering relevant information (education about the grieving process, understanding and gaining coping skills
2) Talking to others about your loss (sharing pictures and creating a book of memories, information and ideas on how to remember and honor your loved one)
3) Listening and sharing with others who have had similar experiences
Peer support groups are one of the best ways to help bereaved teens heal. In a group, teens can connect with other teens who have experienced a loss. They are allowed and encouraged to tell their stories. In this setting of support, most will be willing to acknowledge that death has resulted in their life being changed forever. The death of someone loved is a shattering experience for an adolescent. The teens life is under reconstruction and they need to understand that grief is a natural expression of love for the person who died.
